What is and IBCLC?

An International Board Certified Lactation Consultant (IBCLC) is a healthcare professional who specialises in the clinical management of breastfeeding. An IBCLC is certified by the International Board of Lactation Consultant Examiners (IBLCE), independently accredited by the National Commission for Certifying Agencies (NCCA) of the Institute for Credentialing Excellence (ICE). An IBCLC works in a wide variety of settings, providing support, leadership, advocacy, professional development, and research in the lactation field.

What happens during an appointment?

Prior to the appointment we will send out a history form to learn about your situation, this helps us to prepare for the appointment. During the appointment will go over your history, what issues you are experiencing and plan a way forward. We will observe a feed and may need to do a gentle oral exam of your baby's mouth. We will offer you support in any areas that are needed and provide education around what is happening and evidence on how to improve it. IBCLC's don't simply 'fix' the presenting problem – we work with you to unpick the underlying causes, and then help you to come up with a clear plan to get to where you want to be.

What can you expect from an IBCLC?

Families often have lots of ‘normal’ challenges, like cluster feeding, sleep, weaning and colic. We can help with these and much more.
Examples of some more complicated challenges that I can also support with:
